Now, I am - as I'm sure those who know me will agree - somewhat competitive when it comes to building magic decks and I have a habit of running everything from random builds of my own creation in Standard to modified (note that I don't say better... just modified) versions of the main archetypes.
As an example of this I am currently running R/G monsters in Standard using the old mono-green devotion shell to ramp up into Xenagos, Stormbreath dragon or Sarkhan the Dragonspeaker or into a massive craters claws. Its my own take on things but the basic shell is the same as that found on 90% of pro-tour mono-green and R/G decks.
This irritates me slightly. I like to plan and build all my decks myself and I have to yet copy a list from anywhere in order to play it. However in saying that it usually becomes very obvious what the best card combinations are for any particular shell in a given standard and it's very hard to be competitive without using them. So I do and put up with the occasional guilt for running a deck that looks like a flat out netdeck.
Which is why - every so often I like to run something completely different to anything else, just because something has got into my mind and I like the idea. Last standard I was running a B/G control deck with over 20 kill spells in it. I'm reasonably sure that no one else ran anything even vaguely like it (with good reason as it turned out...)
All this leads up to something I'm really excited about - Jeskai.
I played Jeskai at the Khan's pre-release, continued at the Fate Reforged and played W/U at Dragons of Takir. I absolutely love and adore prowess as a mechanic and I've been lucky enough to pull some interesting rare and mythic cards in Jeskai colors.
So I've decided to make a second standard deck. I know - from moment one - that I have absolutely no chance of playing it in any form of competitive environment (I'll be happy if I can come out with a winning record such as 3-2 at FNM if I'm honest) but it's something that simply has to be done. A full 3 color Jeskai deck based around creatures with prowess and / or creatures that like me to cast non-creature spells (Ojutai Exemplars as an example).
I don't care that it won't win much. I just have visions of all the shaven headed little monks trotting forward to knock the living heck out of whatever my opponent has put in front of them.
So watch this space for whatever list I finally come up with.
