My new Commander Deck

So as it turned out I used:




I ended up buying the White Commander 2014 deck and have decided to combine it with another color to provide equipment based shenanigans. Had a think about using Sigarda or Geist of St Traft but I kind of want Geist as a Tiny Leader and Sigarda has enough ramp to run as a Duel Commander deck and not miss Sol Ring too much.

So welcome my new Commander:


I think that she will fit in just nicely. At least until I can find a copy of Gisela to use...

The idea of using her was partly because I wanted an Angel theme - what with it being Boros colors and all - but also because she gives value. If I can equip her with something that makes it painful to try and block her (Godsend for example) then she will probably end up hitting twice and that will let me rack up commander damage.

The preferred general - due to casting cost and ability - would be Gisela, Blade of Goldnight. In an equipment based deck with Stoneforge Mystic and others around she would be reasonably easy to equip with something that gives her hexproof / shroud and then just bolt on things to her in order to make someone wrath to wipe the board, or risk loosing very quickly to commander damage.

Brion Stoutarm I'd like to have around as he has an alternative route to getting the requisite commander damage in on time and red is full of creatures that have a very high power / very low toughness or high power and need to be sacrificed at end of turn. Brion gets around this by letting me sac them immediately for commander damage. Not my preferred general because in an equipment build he's less useful but I guess even a 1/1 legion loyalist wearing Argentium Armour represents 6 points of commander damage against someone.

Iroas I'm not sure of the benefit of. He's either going to be very good in a deck that already has a LOT of flying (and therefore evasive creatures) making it both harder to stop them and then impossible to destroy them conventionally when you can actually block. That does work well with equipment as smaller creatures will get through for more damage whilst bigger creatures will survive whilst killing chump blockers. I definitely want him in there I'm just not so sure as to what role.

Also in the build - and candidates for carrying the ugly wand (I hit you with it and you become less pretty) are: Baneslayer Angel, Serra Angel, Serra Avenger, Avacyn Angel of Hope, Firemane Avenger etc etc... Definite theme going on here.

Yes - Gisela in particular does rather tend to draw peoples attention...

If it doesn't work out then there is of course an option to go Black / White with Teysa or take my G/W Sigarda deck away from the enchantments it's currently working with and make it an equipment deck instead. Kind of want to do Boros though - just because.

I don't mind the response etc - I am trying to get you into Commander / EDH because I think it would be a format you could enjoy (lots of really insane interactions and a place for all those cards you've been stockpiling up that are over 3CMC)

Agreed - I need to find another reckoner but it will be in there when I do. Technically I could do with another Ash Zealot as well... Hmm I wonder where I might find one of those...

3 Converted Mana Cost - combined cost of a card including all colorless and colored mana but not including any 'x' mana. So Sigarda is CMC5 (or 5CMC) whereas a Mistcutter hydra is technically a CMC1 creature - although you'd never cast it for that. Relevant for Tiny Leader as anything CMC3 or under is legal (banlist excepted) so therefore things like White Sun's Zenith (XWWW) is legal in TL. As is Chord of Calling (XGGG - CMC3)

It might be useful to consider one. There is a good one on MTG Salvation but it is very broad. Perhaps a smaller one relating mostly to 'play and deckbuilding' terms..?

Basandra is a possibility - she's not so bad but does cut off a lot of the combat tricks that I'd want to play - I would want to use her only when I'd got good board advantage.

Sunblast Angel is a possibility - it's big enough to be useful and it has a nice ability - which could be abused with Restoration Angel (which will be in there)

White and Red aren't that good at ramp so am having to think really hard about Avacyn, Akroma angel of Wrath and Angel of Serenity. They may be more at home in the Sigarda G/W deck with all the mana ramp you can eat...

Any angelic suggestions gratefully received though.

I've got a nice foil one for the deck but as 1/100 cards you can't guarentee finding it in any game. Easier to play to the curve and try to curve out around 5 mana with only a few special exceptions 6 mana and up.

... which kind of works well as you get Archangel of Thune and Baneslayer Angel in white and Thundermaw Hellkite and Stormbreath Dragon in Red for 5 which is quite reasonable.

I wouldn't mind adding Akroma Angel of Fury though - just to make the pair with Angel of Wrath.

Oh yes - all the mana fixing that can possibly be found. I was actually playing my Sigarda deck today and was very pleased to find that I didn't get color screwed in 5 straight games. Ok yes - I had Avacyn's Pilgrim and some mana elves but the lands coming out were about in the right proportions and the mana fixing worked. So I just need to work out what the equivalents are for R/W now - everything you mentioned is an automatic inclusion, you are spot on with that.

I think I've still got a couple of the Wind Scarred Crags somewhere so one of those as well as some Keystones and signets - and Chromatic Lantern naturally.

Being a cheatyface I'm only making a 2 color deck so it's not so bad as someone trying to jam 3-5 colors into their mana base. Also I only need 2 red options by turn six onward to get my commander out so the deck can put up with some heavy white costs (Avacyn and Akroma step forward and take a bow.)

Yes, I think the Boros one turned into a soldier with vigilance or something like that - or perhaps first strike - possibly a 2/2 or 3/1. Either way I don't see that ever being used in commander. It's more a source of reliable Red or White Mana.

Also - Slayers Stronghold.

Yeah - between what I've already got and the components from the White precon deck it's got most of everything. I only really need to go hunting for some of the more unusual cards from the older sets. I think it will take me perhaps another month but I should have the deck up and running by the new year. Will save a slot for Gisela for when I next find one somewhere.

Oh yes - found somewhere with a foil Sigarda - £45 !!!

Got this from the folder. The price has really crashed for it... Anyway, I am looking at this for a new Commander... Lots to like with it, as I think is clarly visible...
