As far as fantasy RPGs go, this is the best one I have ever played. The storylines, the quests, the detail, even the UI and the soundtrack all combine to magnificent effect, creating a game that is still my favourite by far, nine years on from release.
I remember when I first acquired it (a second-hand copy for £10 from a local video shop), I was totally immersed into the game world for months. I had never previously played a game with such an awe-inspiring amount of variation and incredible detail. I played very heavily for a year before feeling a little bit tired of it, but I hadn't even explored half of the world properly by that point.
You can go from the snow-capped mountains of the north, to the rugged, forested highlands of the west, the sub-tropical rainforest of the southeast, the almost desert-like coast of the southwest, or the gentle river valleys of the east, all adding to the splendourous diversity of the game environment. You can even travel to fiery planes of Oblivion (which the game is named after), a kind of Hell, and even a painted world.
Nine years on from release and the graphics and engine are looking quite dated, however some of the scenery in the game is still breathtaking. Its successor, Skyrim, is a good game too, but it just doesn't recapture the magic of Oblivion.
Sure, Oblivion is looking old now, but it has aged gracefully. It is still an extraordinary game to play, despite the game mechanics feeling a little bit clunky at times. If you have played it, what do you think? If you haven't, I recommend you do! The game is available on Xbox 360 and the PS3 if computer specifications are a problem.
My intention is not to "advertise" this game, as such, but I feel that people on a forum such as this would likely obtain much enjoyment from Oblivion - I did, and I envy those who will play it for the first time!
I enclose some screenshots (from Google, not mine) below from the game for your perusal.
