First of all, there needs to be a clarification as to what a castle is. That is because the term has been used in a number of ways. The best form of explanation is that a Castle is a defensive structure that can be inhabited in during times of crisis and seige, And can be lived in permanently. It is different to other structures, such as fortresses, because a Castle is inhabited by people other than military personel. Of course, it also stands to reason that there would be military defenders present, under the pay of the noble family. Whilst scholars debate the scope of the word castle, they usually consider it to be the private fortified residence of a lord or noble
The word "castle" derives from the word Castellum, and these were built in Europe and the Middle East during the Middle Ages by noble families. Castle building began in England shortly before the Norman Conquest. All castles were originally wooden structures, that eventually were replaced with stone. There are many design features and element, and thre was an evolution of the design, and it became an architectual science.
The decline of castles began when gunpowder allowed the invention of the cannon to occur. When the Fall of Constantinople by Mehmed II in the year 1453 happened, it was a major signal that Castles were not any more a solid institution for defence. As a result, they ended up becoming places of administration and court. The military aspect was superceded once more by the fortress over time.
This thread is intented to become a resource point for castles; their construction, their design, their evolution, their history.
