Watson: I thought we should discuss Hermione… I’m sure you’ve heard this a million times but now that you have written the books, do you have a new perspective on how you relate to Hermione and the relationship you have with her or had with her?

Rowling: I know that Hermione is incredibly recognizable to a lot of readers and yet you don’t see a lot of Hermiones in film or on TV except to be laughed at. I mean that the intense, clever, in some ways not terribly self-aware, girl is rarely the heroine and I really wanted her to be the heroine. She is part of me, although she is not wholly me. I think that is how I might have appeared to people when I was younger, but that is not really how I was inside.

What I will say is that I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment. That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione with Ron.

Watson: Ah.

Rowling: I know, I’m sorry, I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.

Watson: I don’t know. I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy.

Rowling: Yes exactly.

Watson: And vice versa.

Rowling: It was a young relationship. I think the attraction itself is plausible but the combative side of it… I’m not sure you could have got over that in an adult relationship, there was too much fundamental incompatibility. I can’t believe we are saying all of this – this is Potter heresy!

In some ways Hermione and Harry are a better fit, and I’ll tell you something very strange. When I wrote Hallows, I felt this quite strongly when I had Hermione and Harry together in the tent! I hadn’t told [Steven] Kloves that and when he wrote the script he felt exactly the same thing at exactly the same point.

Watson: This is just so interesting because when I was doing the scene, I said to David [Heyman]: “This isn’t in the book, she didn’t write this.” I’m not sure I am comfortable insinuating something however subtle it is!

Rowling: Yes, but David and Steve – they felt what I felt when writing it.

Watson: That is so strange.

Rowling: And actually I liked that scene in the film, because it was articulating something I hadn’t said but I had felt. I really liked it and I thought that it was right. I think you do feel the ghost of what could have been in that scene.

Watson: It’s a really haunting scene. It is funny because it really divided people. Some people loved that scene and some people really didn’t.

Rowling: Yes, some people utterly hated it. But that is true of so many really good scenes in books and films; they evoke that strong positive/negative feeling. I was fine with it, I liked it.

Watson: I remember really loving shooting those scenes that don’t have any dialogue, where you are just kind of trying to express a moment in time and a feeling without saying anything. It was just Dan and I spontaneously sort of trying to convey an idea and it was really fun.

Rowling: And you got it perfectly, you got perfectly the sort of mixture of awkwardness and genuine emotion, because it teeters on the edge of “What are we doing? Oh come on let’s do it anyway,” which I thought was just right for that time.

Watson: I think it was just the sense that in the moment they needed to be together and be kids and raise each others morale.

Rowling: That is just it, you are so right. All this says something very powerful about the character of Hermione as well. Hermione was the one that stuck with Harry all the way through that last installment, that very last part of the adventure. It wasn’t Ron, which also says something very powerful about Ron. He was injured in a way, in his self-esteem, from the start of the series. He always knew he came second to fourth best, and then he had to make friends with the hero of it all and that’s a hell of a position to be in, eternally overshadowed. So Ron had to act out in that way at some point.

But Hermione’s always there for Harry. I remember you sent me a note after you read Hallows and before you starting shooting, and said something about that, because it was Hermione’s journey as much as Harry’s at the end.

Watson: I completely agree and the fact that they were true equals and the fact that she really said goodbye to her family makes it her sacrifice too.

Rowling: Yes, her sacrifice was massive, completely. A very calculated act of bravery. That is not an “in the moment” act of bravery where emotion carries you through, that is a deliberate choice.

Watson: Exactly.

Rowling: I love Hermione.

Watson: I love her too.

Rowling: Oh, maybe she and Ron will be alright with a bit of counseling, you know. I wonder what happens at wizard marriage counseling? They’ll probably be fine. He needs to work on his self-esteem issues and she needs to work on being a little less critical.

Watson: I think it makes sense to me that Ron would make friends with the most famous wizard in the school because I think life presents to you over and over again your biggest and most painful fear – until you conquer it. It just keeps coming up.

Rowling: This is so true, it has happened in my own life. The issue keeps coming up because you are drawn to it and you are putting yourself in front of it all the time. At a certain point you have to choose what to do about it and sometimes conquering it is choosing to say: I don’t want that anymore, I’m going to stop walking up to you because there is nothing there for me. But yes, you’re so right, that’s very insightful. Ron’s used to playing second fiddle. I think that’s a comfortable role for him, but at a certain point he has to be his own man, doesn’t he?

Watson: Yes, and until he does it is unresolved. It is unfinished business. So maybe life presented this to him enough times until he had to make a choice and become the man that Hermione needs.

Rowling: Just like her creator, she has a real weakness for a funny man. These uptight girls, they do like them funny.

Watson: They do like them funny, they need them funny.

J.K. Rowling goes Beyond the Epilogue

J.K. Rowling has announced in new interviews with the Today show on NBC TV today (July 26) that the epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was vague on purpose.

She said it was her desire for it to be "nebulous," something "poetic," and that she wanted the readers to feel as if they were looking at Platform 9 3/4 through the mist, unable to make out exactly who was there and who was not.

She admitted her original epilogue was "a lot more detailed," including the name of every child born to the Weasley clan in the past 19 years. For example, Victoire, who was snogging Teddy, Lupin and Tonks' son, is Bill and Fleur's eldest child.

"But it didn't work very well as a piece of writing," J.K. said. "It felt very much that I had crowbarred in every bit of information I could ... In a novel you have to resist the urge to tell everything."

But now that Book 7 is in our hands, J.K. no longer has to hold back any information about Harry Potter. With 14 fans crowded around her in Edinburgh Castle in Scotland earlier this week, J.K. has now told us the following exciting information:

Harry, Ron and Hermione

In the book, Voldemort meets his end and Harry lives. But J.K. said Harry's survival was not always a certainty.

"In the early days, everything was up for grabs," she told USA Today. "But early on I knew I wanted Harry to believe he was walking toward his death, but would survive."

The epilogue tells us that Harry marries Ginny and has three kids. J.K. explained that this created the family and the peace and calm that Harry never had as a child.

An often asked question is what are Harry, Ron and Herione doing now? J.K. said that Harry, along with Ron, is working at the Auror Department at the Ministry of Magic, and after all these years, Harry is now the department head.

"Harry and Ron utterly revolutionized the Auror Department," Rowling said. "They are now the experts. It doesn't matter how old they are or what else they've done."

Meanwhile, J.K. said that Hermione, Ron's wife, is "pretty high up" in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, despite the fact that she laughed at the idea of becoming a lawyer in the scene with Scrimgeour in Deathly Hallows.

"I would imagine that her brainpower and her knowledge of how the Dark Arts operate would really give her a sound grounding," J.K. said.

An important point for J.K. was that Harry, Ron and Hermione don't join the same Ministry of Magic they had been at odds with for years. In joining it, they revolutionize it and help evolve the Ministry into a "really good place to be."

"They made a new world," Rowling said.

Luna Lovegood

Luna Lovegood, the eccentric Ravenclaw who was fascinated with Crumple-Horned Snorkacks and Umgubular Slashkilters, continues to march to the beat of her own drum after leaving Hogwarts.

"I think that Luna is now traveling the world looking for various mad creatures," J.K. said. "She's a naturalist, whatever the wizarding equivalent of that is."

But she isn't completely crazy. J.K. said that Luna comes to see the truth about her father, eventually acknowledging there are some creatures that don't exist.

"But I do think that she's so open-minded and just an incredible person that she probably would be uncovering things that no one's ever seen before," Rowling said.

Luna and Neville Longbottom?

When she was first asked about the possibility of Luna hooking up with Neville Longbottom several years ago, Rowling's response was "Definitely not." But as time passed and she watched her characters mature, Rowling started to "feel a bit of a pull" between the unlikely pair.

Ultimately, Rowling left the question of their relationship open at the end of the book because doing otherwise "felt too neat."

J.K. told the fans that, sadly, there is no chance that Neville's parents, who were tortured into madness by Bellatrix and Rudolphus Lestrange, will ever leave St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies.

"I know people really wanted some hope for that, and I can quite see why because, in a way, what happens to Neville's parents is even worse than what happened to Harry's parents," J.K. said. "The damage that is done, in some cases with very dark magic, is done permanently."

However, she said Neville finds happiness in his grandmother's acceptance of him as a gifted wizard and as the new herbology professor at Hogwarts.

Some lived, Some Died

In earlier interviews, J.K. had said that there were was a character she claims she had intended to kill in book 5, "The Order of the Phoenix," but didn't. She admits now that character was Ron's dad, Arthur Weasley.

"He was the person who got a reprieve. When I sketched out the books, Mr. Weasley was due to die in Book Five. I swapped him for someone else, and I don't want to say who for the people who haven't read it. But I made a decision as I went into writing Phoenix that I was going to reprieve Mr. Weasley and I was going to kill someone else. And if you finish the book, I expect you probably know and someone else who is a father. I couldn't bear to kill him," J.K. said.

But there were also two characters that died who J.K. had not originally planned to kill in the finale. She said, "Fred, Lupin and Tonks really caused me a lot of pain. Lupin and Tonks were two who were killed who I had intended to keep alive. It's like an exchange of hostages, isn't it?"

The future of Hogwarts

J.K. said that "McGonagall was really getting on a bit," and nineteen years after the Battle of Hogwarts, there is an entirely new headmaster. Also, there is a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, and that position is now as safe as the other teaching posts at Hogwarts, since Voldemort's death broke the jinx that kept a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor from remaining for more than a year.

J.K. didn't clarify whether Harry, Ron and Hermione ever return to school to finish their seventh year, but she did say she could see Harry making an appearance every now and again to give the "odd talk" on Defense Against the Dark Arts.

The Confusing Ending, and More Info To Come

And for those readers who found chapter 34, when Harry enters the forrest to face Voldemort once and for all, difficult to read, J.K. said she understands. It was extremely difficult to write, she says -- the most difficult of all the chapters in the seven books.

"I had this enormous explosion of emotion and I cried and cried and cried," she said.

And while ending the series was also sad, it was also a bit of a relief. "It was this amazing cathartic moment – the end of 17 years' work," Rowling said of finishing the series, adding that Harry will "always be a presence in my life, really."

J.K. again confirmed she may eventually reveal more details in a Harry Potter encyclopedia, but even then, it will never be enough to satisfy the most ardent of her fans.

"I'm dealing with a level of obsession in some of my fans that will not rest until they know the middle names of Harry's great-great-grandparents," she said. Not that she's discouraging the Potter devotion!

"I love it," she said. "I'm all for that."

JK Rowling has spoken out about suggestions Hogwarts doesn't reflect a diversity of belief systems and claims the only religion not represented at the fictional school is Wicca.

The author took to Twitter to explain why the a modern pagan religion related to witches and wizards was not represented in her famous Harry Potter books.

She said: "To everyone asking whether their religion/belief/non-belief system is represented at Hogwarts: the only people I never imagined there are Wiccans.

"It's a different concept of magic to the one laid out in the books, so I don't really see how they can co-exist."

JK Rowling addressed the issue during a Twitter question and answer session when asked why there were no Jewish students at Hogwarts featured in her best-selling books.

She explained that this was incorrect and that Anthony Goldstein, a Ravenclaw pupil, was in fact a Jewish wizard.

The novelist has been tweeting a lot about Potter news recently and has released new writing on the Pottermore website, including a backstory to Dolores Umbridge and new stories concerning Draco Malfoy.

She also recently admitted that she regretted killing off the minor character Florean Fortescue who owns an ice cream parlor at Diagon Alley.

Rowling admitted she was "writing herself into a corner" when she included the death.

Well, I bumped into the article by accident.

The big thing is that it is Rowling herself who is holding the mirror! I hadn't even thought at all about any of this in the story. Believe it or not, I don't usually go into that level of pedantry. But... why the heck would Jews go to Hogwarts, and not Wiccans? The whole thing is not just weird, but completely daft! Why is religion being dragged into it by the author? if she is missing the Potter world so much, then she should go and write some more. I have to admit that I wonder if she is attention seeking with this latest from her...

And as for having to have multiple ethnicities... it annoys me. You have to have so many boxes ticked... why? If someone wanted me to have a black main character... what then? I won't write such a story, for a good reason. I'm not black. How the heck could I create such a character, and not offend the black community?!? I stick to what I know, for simple, logical reasons. I have a half Japanese character in Thorns, and she will have a tough time with her own arc. She would struggle with who she is in Japanese society. The Japanese are not overly welcoming to those who are mixed race. But, I can see people scream at me, because they will feel I'm being racist... :facepalm:

As for the Eighties, there was some creeping in of this sort of thing. Look at Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." The song is making girls out to be vapid party creatures, and the video... pretty much all of her friends are not white. Which is demographically wrong. there wouldn't have been that number of different ethnicities as her friends in the Eighties! So, it is there, you just have to dig a bit deeper to find it. It makes me wonder if there are people who want all of the human race to be one mixed ethnicity, With no variations at all amongst us. Which is outright potty, in my opinion. Diversity should be celebrated, not crushed.

As for when we started to care about such labels in Young Adults... certainly started appearing in about 2001. I think it is earlier than that, though I would need to read a fair bit to no doubt pin down when it exactly started to appear.

To be honest there shouldn't have to be but it's like a scab - once someone mentions it (picks it) you can't help but to think of it...

Well you have a Goldstein, Cho-Chang (obligatory asian girl) and two (count em!) gingers as main characters so I guess she's ticked most of the boxes without trying.

I was more thinking about literature in the 80's but you are absolutely right. It was beginning to drop in, certainly by the late 80's.

Strangely enough I had a training day at work today and one of the best lines I've heard was spoken in relation to inclusivity (in the context of my workplace) and it was that "we shouldn't be trying to treat everybody equally but rather we should treat everybody fairly" which, when you unpack it, is absolutely right. It's not about making one size fit everyone, it's about respecting and celebrating the differences between people and catering for them.

Agreed. And guess what... I don't think of Wicca when reading those books! And the whole wand thing is amusing, because - as you correctly say - it gets barmy in the last few books, with wands switching loyalty and such forth. And why are they buying their wands? I get it when they first start school, but wouldn't it be a mark of development and mastery being able to make your own wand? Then again, you have so many things in the Potter universe that don't properly add up, it is par for the course...

Nicely put. It opens up a whole can of worms, doesn't it? Are there Wiccans out in the world, and if so, could they have had the power to resist Voldemort? And what about Voudun, or Shamanism, for example? Where do they fit into this? And lets not forget that they go to Hogwarts, which is the most unsafe school in the land! Think about it: you have attacking trolls, Multi-headed dogs guarding stuff, Basilisks living in the catacombs under the castle, numerous battles occur there... The place should be closed on Health and Safety grounds!

I'll try to find better examples, though it may take more time.

Strangely enough I had a training day at work today and one of the best lines I've heard was spoken in relation to inclusivity (in the context of my workplace) and it was that "we shouldn't be trying to treat everybody equally but rather we should treat everybody fairly" which, when you unpack it, is absolutely right. It's not about making one size fit everyone, it's about respecting and celebrating the differences between people and catering for them.

No, I'm glad you added it in. It fits in perfectly. And this is how characters in stories should be, too. Treated fairly. It annoys me when you get a character who is ethnic, and the only reason is to make it multi-cultural. If it doesn't help the story, why put it in? Focus on the topics that truly matter, and make sure they are done right...

JK Rowling has revealed which one of her famous characters she most regrets killing off.

The best-selling author, writing on her Pottermore website, said it was a character in her book Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Sadly, it wasn't Dumbledore or Dobby - but the death of Florean Fortesque, owner of Diagon Alley's ice-cream parlour and only a minor character.

“I originally planned Florean to be the conduit for clues that I needed to give Harry during his quest for the Hallows, which is why I established an acquaintance fairly early on,” she said.

Well, I'm going to sound harsh here, but... what is the problem? I envision things all the time. They don't always pan out as I first envisioned. And why the regret? He is a minor character... the guy was so insignificant, I can't remember him at all... Thus, I feel proving my point...

I suppose looking back at a finished project - with hindsight - it may simply be that she can see the 'loose end' where that story option had been developed and then pruned in favor of the Phineas Black option and would rather have left it nice and smooth.

I get that... But if it is so important to her, why doesn't she just explore it some moire? Maybe even see a way to not kill him? I think it is a case of her having gotten hung up on something no-one else will ever notice about - or care. Sometimes, it happens, and you just say nothing. Because there is no point in mentioning it, because it will mean very, very little for the vast majority of people.
