So I've got a commander deck that I'm using to test several different legends out as potential commanders - it's a pretty standard mono-black 'good stuff' deck that doesn't do anything especially uniquely but in return can chuck out threats each turn like they are going out of fashion.
The other day I was playing EDH with Kiku, Night's Flower as my commander and although I went on to win the game (through the worlds most janky combo ever) I thought at the time that she hadn't appeared to do that much for me whilst she was out (spending most of the time being being tapped down by various effects).
I've moved on and am now testing Nefarox in the big boss's seat - where he is doing an excellent job of really annoying people - and after him will probably be Drana or even Ghoulcaller Gisa as I can already see a lot of potential for playing with Zombies (Yes I know that with her and Geralf I could make a Grimgrin deck - but this is mono-black testing)
However I just can't bring myself to abandon Kiku. I like the unashamed nature of her as a walking kill spell that can be re-used turn after turn. I also like her low casting cost. However I feel that she may get swamped quickly by large multiplayer games where there are too many threats and not enough ways to untap her. So... Tiny Kiku?
As a Tiny Leader she is actually quite attractive. There are enough 'Assassin' types within the mana restriction to give a hint of tribal but also (as her flavor touches on the undead) there are spots for things like Vampire Nighthawk and Xanthred Necromancer. Being able to churn out vampires or zombies each turn never hurts and there is more than enough justification to run some kill spells in a Kiku deck and against only one opponent at a time she moves from 'something irrirating early game' to 'something that must be dealt with in order to safely bring out my general' (most of the time anyway - I know some generals have stats that would protect them from her ability) so actually she begins to look quite attractive in this format.
Will I be able to create a 'win every time' Kiku deck? No, of course not. But could I create a fun deck that might be enjoyable to play and has enough nasty surprises to hold it's own for a few turns against even the powerhouses of the format (Erzui !!) and make for a good night of play?
Yes, I think so.
It might just have to be done.
